My Friend, Not Me

by Dith

Every day, more and more people fall
for my friend. Not me, my friend.
What a predicament to be in.
Surely everyone has been in
one of these before. Has known
the subliminal loneliness it entails.
Has known the sickened cringes
brought on by the mention of their name.
It sticks out like a sore thumb.
No one desires you, it is your
friend they desire. You are denied
and they are accepted. That's
what everyone wants, to be accepted.
Every day it confronts you.
The friend becomes a temple of envy
but the envy isn't your fault.
Relentless comments have moved
you toward this envy. You walk with
them and pray you won't catch
a passerby taking a glimpse, or
an acquaintance blowing a kiss.
Everyday, more and more people fall
for my friend. My friend, not me.
