What kind of poetry is welcome at the Backroom Words?
All kinds. Angst poetry, haiku, beat poetry, spoken word, reminisces, love poetry, and in the words of our host, "even poetry that sucks" - all are welcome.
How long do I have? / How many poems can I read?
We try to keep some kind of lid on the time for the benefit of all the artists - around five minutes and a maximum of three poems on most nights, but the host has the final say.
How many artists usually read in a night?
It varies. We leave space for up to 30 in any given night, but you usually won't have a problem finding a spot to read. Come early to insure yourself a nice seat and a choice place on the list.
Will I be censored?
Are you shitting me? Seriously ... The Backroom Words prides itself in providing its poets an UNcensored chunk of time to put their work on the stage. Whatever you have to say, however you need to say it, go ahead.
Gosh, I'm scared. What if I get booed?
Please. You are not at the Met. The atmosphere is always informal at the Backroom Words, and guests and artists are encouraged to show respect for all performers.
